We’re delighted to share with you the exciting news that we have been awarded this year’s Collections Fund from Contemporary Art Society. The award enables Norwich Castle to acquire a suite of photographs by award-winning Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama. 🧵

In this sketch by Frederick Sandys (1829-1904), the enchantress Vivien is portrayed by Sandy's lover and muse Keomi Gray. Little is known of Keomi's life aside from her long affair with Sandys, but her portrait hints at the rich stories hidden within our favourite artworks.

We're delighted to share the news that we've acquired this glorious painting by influential Dutch landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/9-1682). Our technicians have been hard at work installing it this week and it's now on permanent display in our Colman Art Galleries!

'Panoramic Landscape with Cornfields and Dunes beside the Sea' shows a low-lying land and huge expanse of sky, combining Ruisdael’s ability to capture the effects of light and movement with an understanding of nature’s smallest details. It's believed to be an imaginary landscape.

The acquisition was made possible by the government’s Acceptance in Lieu scheme together with generous support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund and the Rought Fund, The Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and Friends of Norwich Museums. We're extremely grateful!
