“every path requires the construction of significant transmission—1.3–2.9 times current transmission capacity by 2035, translating to at least 1,400–10,100 miles of new high-capacity lines per year, assuming new construction began in 2026.”

We need institutionalize and automate this. Pre cool while solar is plentiful by a couple degrees, use less 4-9 pm. Even some simple dumb cooling and EV charging habits would help. Simple clear retail price discounts would too.

Babe, you ok? You've barely touched the suite of technologies that could double capacity for #renewables on existing transmission infrastructure. watt-transmission.org/what-are-grid-…

Why #transmission is so important to the #electricity #grid. Remember the #synopticscales. It is large and we must interconnect regions together for these #regular events! Look at the difference between the east & west for next week! We need to connect them!

The solution, of course, isn't more renewable energy or other energy sources. It's better transmission connections to neighboring grids so utilities can import power as needed, rather than engage in rolling blackouts and put their customers at risk.

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) modeled the value of Dynamic Line Ratings compared to Ambient Adjusted Ratings in ERCOT. While AAR improves on static ratings, DLR has more than TWICE the benefits for #renewables and cost savings! ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10012…

With the power outage with Entergy New Orleans this morning for two hours, might be a good time to talk about the Value of Lost Load, or VOLL, as the electric industry calls it. VOLL is an estimate of the economic impact due to power outages. A thread.

"We simply cannot keep operating under the current status quo. Our current incremental approach to planning transmission is the most expensive way to provide energy to households and businesses," says Steve Handy in a new Deseret News op-ed. Read it here: deseret.com/opinion/2024/0…

So great to see @California_ISO include advanced conductors as a solution for congestion in the latest 20 year outlook. Tesla-Metcalf 500 kV! Lots of 230kV in the Bay Area, and Round Mountain (up north) too. caiso.com/InitiativeDocu…

If Grid Enhancing Technologies were also used, the benefits could be even greater. After @FERC Order No. 1920 is implemented, RTOs like SPP will be required to evaluate GETs in place of and to increase the value of traditional transmission investments.
