On #InternationalCatDay, the Viking cats discovered in Whithorn with skinning marks on their skeletons are a grim reminder of their past. The skulls of these cats are still on display at the museum, highlighting the unique history between humans and cats throughout the centuries.

Christian was Bishop of Whithorn from 1154 to 1186AD. He is the Bishop who is thought to have installed the Premonstratensian monastic order at Whithorn Priory Cathedral.

On August 19th, 1561, Mary, the Queen of Scots, at the age of 18, comes back to Scotland following a 13-year stay in France.

Alexander Vaus (or Vance) was Bishop of Whithorn between 1422-1450 CE. Formerly Bishop of Caithness, he may have been associated with Fearn Abbey, a daughter house of Whithorn Priory in Easter Ross.

Join us at the Whithorn Trust the first weekend of September for Doors Open Days. The Trust will be open both Saturday and Sunday and I will be presenting some of the iron finds from the collection storage. Highlighting some of our work and explaining the effects of corrosion!

Máel Ruba, born around 642 and died in 722, is a revered Christian saint, feast day August 27th, April 21st or May 4th. From Ireland, he had a significant impact in Scotland. He lived a solitary life and established the Applecross monastic community in Ross.

The Burghs of Whithorn and Wigtown have had an occasionally tumultuous relationship. Wigtown, claiming earlier and more prominent Burgh rights, took Whithorn to court in the early 16th century over rights over trade at sea. #WhithornWednesday

Adam de Lanark was Bishop of Whithorn between 1363 and 1378CE. Formerly a Dominican (Black) Friar, he was a leading cleric and advisor to David II of Scotland. #WhithornWednesday

We had a visit from the Galloway Conservation Society yesterday, for a tour around the museum stores to see the work on the Whithorn Collection and we topped it off with a tour of the new archaeology display in the Stranraer Museum!

It has been a while since we did a #FindsFriday but the excavation archive is providing so many wonderful images from the excavations. What looks to be a wooden stake and one of the metal buckets. The third image is a bit of a mystery as I haven't seen it in the collection 🍳
