If your antibiotic discovery strategy involves targeting the outer membrane of Gram-negs, it's good to know that pesky resistance mechanisms may not spoil the party. Lovely work here by Craig MacNair who takes a thorough approach this question. mbio.asm.org/content/11/5/e…
(1/n) Can we determine what will be the outcome of infection by understanding the very early events after exposure? We try to answer this in our new manuscript , led by a great PhD student Dotan Hoffman where we analyse early stages of Salmonella infection: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Lots of fun writing this piece on this fantastic paper! @jay_salsa Caisey Pulford
I am happy to announce that as of today the Elhenawy lab will take off at MedMicro&Immunology. Thus, the lab, Justin Bieber, and less importantly the PI, accidentally shared their birthdays! The lab will focus on investigating the role of pathobionts in driving Crohn's disease.
Hot off the presses from PLOS Pathogens is our latest on the emerging and divergent roles of pyrophosphorylated nucleotides in bacterial physiology and pathogenesis. Great team effort with @elizabethchau and @sasheriahmad at the helm, plus John Whitney dx.plos.org/10.1371/journa…
I am recruiting a grad student for Fall 2022. Come work with us Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology. We are investigating the pathogenesis of Crohn's-associated bacteria using approaches that combine genomics and biochemistry. For more details, check elhenawylab.com A RT will be much appreciated!
I'm so excited our paper on reducing the emergence of antibiotic resistance during treatment is finally out in Science Magazine!!! Roy Kishony @idanyelin science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
A tour de force in RNA biochemistry by McMaster Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences PhD student Nathan Bullen ! Thank you for teaching me all about the wonderful world of bacterial RNAs and how they are subverted by this potent antibacterial toxin. cell.com/molecular-cell…
I am pleased to share the latest work from the Coombes lab, "Screening under infection-relevant conditions reveals chemical sensitivity in multidrug-resistant invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS)" McMaster Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences McMaster IIDR biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 🧵
🚨🚨I'm proud to present our lab's first peer-reviewed paper, out at Cell Host & Microbe🥳. We started out by asking a basic question about mucus secretion, and discovered something surprising about genetic risk to inflammatory bowel diseases (#IBD). A🧵/1 cell.com/cell-host-micr…
Physician in training by day, alarmone biochemist by night – Congrats to McMaster Biochemistry Graduate Program alumnus Sheri Ahmad! Enzymes that specifically hydrolyze (p)ppApp. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
🚨 I am proud to present the latest work from the Coombes lab, published open-access, in Royal Society of Chemistry on our efforts to combat drug-resistant invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella disease. A short 🧵on the backstory and what we found... pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…
