Narratives around maturity, immaturity, 'becoming an adult' and having agency are always deeply political and always racialised, gendered and classed. But it's such a stark contrast, when a 15 year old is an adult terrorist but a 24 year old is a child who cannot know their mind.

Quite apart from how deeply infantilising this is to people who can get married, have kids, join the armed services, take on thousands in student debt, work as lawyers, doctors, teachers, but still not understand their own gender identity: Shamima Begum isn't yet 25 years old.
