Cape Hatteras National Seashore has opened a new 16-car parking area just north of Buxton Village. The parking area provides a safer experience for Seashore visitors along a stretch of N.C. Highway 12 that is popular for both sound side & ocean side recreational activities.

In an abundance of caution, and due to darkness, ocean overwash and water on the roadway, we have made the decision to CLOSE NC12 on Ocracoke between the ferry terminal and the pony pens until further notice. Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke is also suspended.

Due to heavy rains and continued ocean overwash, we will NOT be reopening NC12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island today. The water is extremely deep and conditions are unsafe for driving. NCDOT crews will re-evaluate conditions after Wednesday morning's high tide.

NC12 remains CLOSED on the north end of Ocracoke Island. While this morning's high tide was not as bad as previous ones, there still remains about a mile of deep ponded water that makes it unsafe for traffic. Elsewhere, NC12 is open and passable with water and sand in spots.

NC12 on Ocracoke remains open, although we did see ocean overwash in several places at high tide. The tide is coming down now, so we are planning to keep the highway open during daylight hours. HOWEVER, be aware that a nighttime closure is possible. Drive with EXTREME caution.

Beach conditions are posted daily each morning at LoveTheBeachRespectTheOcean.com. It’s also a good idea to check in with the lifeguard when you arrive at the beach each day to learn about things such as rip currents or marine activity at your access.
