I always have greater goals than abilities when post night shift so set the bar low for today - answer some (old…) correspondence.

Currently trying to sound all put together in my messages while in fuzzy pajamas, wrapped up in a giant tortilla blanket, with a parrot on my head.

People have no idea how much emerg docs sometimes have to fight to get patients to the care they need, and how often systemic challenges leave us stuck spending hours back and forth on the phone trying to get the right people involved.

A favourite podcast of mine is This Podcast Will Kill You. This week’s ep is on fever. Near the end they mention malariotherapy.

I recommend Bedside Rounds #31 on Malariotherapy as a follow up listen and #45 “The French Disease at 500.” Great episodes of an awesome pod.

Absolutely the case on PEI too. The burden of unmanaged chronic disease is immense here.

It is awful to see patients with multiple diagnoses with no choice but walk in clinics or Maple. Elderly patients with no one to monitor their health as they age can lose so much.

I have my first mosquito bite of the season and that frankly feels a little insulting when it’s only 4°C out.

We at least deserve some warmth before suffering through tiny vampire season.

If you want to know what happens to the ER when you lose or don't have hospital beds - let me tell you - the ER becomes a ward and the ER becomes waiting room medicine and standing at the counter medicine.

When 90% of Ontario hospitals are running a deficit with a useless 1%

Never underestimate the power you have to change someone’s life for the better, even just the smallest gesture.

I received a kind note from someone today, unexpectedly.

It probably took them a minute or two to write.

It’s turned my whole day around.

I’m making a pavlova for dessert tonight so had four egg yolks to use.

So I’m also making lava cakes and hollandaise to go with some steamed broccoli and may try making some fries to go with the hollandaise (it’s good trust me.)

I’m stuck in a cooking spiral.

Can’t figure out how to not wrap her leash around every tree she passes, but has mastered the skill of emotional manipulation.

Change starts with respect and a new brand. Family physicians are often called GPs or non-specialists. Medical students who “specialize”in family medicine are called family physicians. It’s time to recognize that family physicians are specialists too. The College of Family Physicians of Canada

I got my 5yo’s spring school pictures (because this is apparently a thing now) and they are awesome. He’s posing with his arms flexed in a Batman shirt and it’s so freaking cute that I’m going to have to buy the overpriced things.

Any time I trade myself into shifts with a short time in between, I convince myself it won’t be that bad.

No matter how many times I do this to myself, I don’t seem to learn.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I'll end with a piece I wrote nearly 5 yrs ago about sick notes. Nothing has changed since then - except perhaps the continued loss of doctors from primary care and the continued bureaucratic abuse of sick employees.
