The FBU must review its relationship with Thompsons. That firm often does not apply the focus or diligence necessary when assessing the merits of legal claims. Too many potential claims are written off with insufficient consideration.This is a growing concern among many FBU reps.

Aside from the fact that this statement is horrendously ill-judged, since when has the FBU issued statements on policy in the names of only the general secretary, assistant general secretary and minority sections? Why is the executive council not referenced? Did it have a say?

Within the past 48 hours, the annual conference of my trade union, the Fire Brigades Union, has voted in favour of statements that brand Reform UK and gender-critical activists as 'far right'. The utter debasement of the term 'far right' demeans our politics. It needs to stop.

The resolution passed. It is now the official policy of the FBU that the supreme court was wrong to say 'women' and 'men' are defined by biological sex for the purposes of law and that supporters of the ruling are basically Nazis & fascists. What on Earth were delegates thinking?
