The new government did not mention EWR in their manifesto. But we now learn they are increasing taxes and borrowing to fund it. To recap, they still have not answered the NAO’s question on how the benefits would be delivered.

If you want to grow Cambridge EWR is not a good approach. The chosen route does not support local plans, predicted passenger numbers are pathetic and the associated housing would just put lots more cars on the road.

Mark Williamson Hard to believe East of England MP’s want maximum growth for the UK’s best farm land with a water crisis. Camb MP Daniel Zeichner now UK Farming Minister “We can’t wait for reservoirs & slow down growth because we’re in a global race”. MPs happy to shaft farmers & chalk streams?

The Centre for Cities report, correctly suggesting the 1.5m target will be missed, grimly sticks to the misguided view that planning is the bar, rather than the real reason: builders only build when profit is in sight. They stop when sales drop. centreforcities.org/publication/re…

The Elizabeth line cost £67,000 per London commuter. The borders railway was £100,000 per Edinburgh commuter. EWR would be £4million per Cambridge commuter. Why on earth are they still working on this project?

Also why did the transport secretary (before she resigned over an historic fraud conviction) say it would support 28000 Cambridge jobs and when their model says 2000? What are we coming to in this country?

By the end of this financial year EWR will have spent £446million just planning Bletchley to Cambridge and they still can’t explain the business case - beyond saying that some really important people think it’s a good idea.

"..public transport is one of the things that a country does that everyone can see and touch. It is therefore attractive to politicians who want to be seen to be doing something ... what that often results in is a service that tries to do a lot of things badly." FT 12 Nov 24

“East west rail, gosh prepare to be unpopular” said NIC Chairman John Armitt to TSC see Qu.38. If you want to mess up beautiful villages don’t come to us with a half-baked case and the most damaging route! Good grief. committees.parliament.uk/oralevidence/1…

No your eyes are not deceiving you... The EWR preferred Southern route into Cambridge really is the Great Elephant of Cambridgeshire.

The Cambridgeshire Mayoral election was the first time ever people were given a vote on the EWR route. Paul Bristow said he wanted it to go much further south and that the link from Cambourne should be replaced by light rail. Over to you Lord Peter Hendy, the people have spoken.
