Playing Dragon Age Origins. Fun story, but I feel like my characters are not levelling with my foes. It gets hard to enjoy a game when you get immediately wrecked 5 times before you can even figure out what's killing you.

Dragon Age: Origins perports to be "dark fantasy," but one of the NPCs is a pun-making, rhyme-talking tree-ent who kindly asks you to recover his stolen acorn. Just because there's undead and demons doesn't make it dark. Tolkien had that in the Hobbit.

Dragon Age Origins: The dwarf missions bore me. They are stock dwarves. Live underground, mine ore, tradition, family, and caste. The succession dispute is boring. Two kinda shitty people and no one knows who's right. I can't tell enough different to decide who to support!

The problem with reading lots of classics is that acquiring agents want recent comparables for my novel, and I'm sitting here thinking "Vorkosigan Saga meets Pride and Prejudice" for my most recent book. Or P&P + Game of Thrones, but that's quickly becoming not-recent.

Modern media suffers from false comparibles. "Some people think the Earth is flat. Let's discuss!" only hurts our society. Not all points of view are equal. You have to acknowledge when some people are simply and obviously wrong.

The biggest Star Trek fiction is how tech just works. There's occasional plot-critical malfunction, but devices do what they should Computers never just drop files. Phasers don't refuse to fire until a new update installs. Replicators don't get paper jams Tech fails s/b daily!
