Robert Gordon Sproul, Class of 1913 and President of the University of California 1930-1958, was born May 22, 1891. Sproul was a varsity track athlete and a member of Cal Band. As President, he was responsible for the creation of the multiple campus U.C. system.

Happy Birthday to Cal Band. On May 23, 1891, the University Cadet Band gave its very first performance - at Athletic Field Day, an intramural sports competition on campus. The University Cadet Band would later become the student-run Cal Band. #CalBandGreat
