It’s not enough to succeed if your community is struggling. You have to try to pull people up with you. I am so proud to announce the launch of the 1619 Freedom School in my hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, labeled in 2018 the worst place in U.S. to be Black. 1619freedomschool.org.

Parents absolutely get to decide what books their kids read or don’t, but their jurisdiction doesn’t extend to other people’s children. Our family (and many others) wants our kids/grandkids to read accurate history and the rich stories of ALL of humanity. Leave our kids alone.

The U.S. Department of Education believe as many as 50% of intermediate grade students may not have attained sufficient fluency skills to maximize comprehension of texts they read.

Curriculum and experts often hang their hats on One Thing. Volume reading—not enough. Leveled texts—not enough. Background knowledge—not enough. It’s a quilt, and we should ask ourselves, which squares in our quilt are too big? (Hint: your phonics square is probably too small).

On MSV: meaning cues are extremely helpful in helping students IDENTIFY errors. Phonics helps them correct those errors. Should kids be guessing words? No. But let’s stop pretending like the question, “did that make sense?” Isn’t useful in self-correction.

How are we letting programs that are not backed by research fix their issues and sell the repackaged version of the curriculum?? Shouldn’t they be correcting their errors and sending that material out for free?
