The Amazon rainforest doesn't just remove ~2 billions tons of CO2 every year. It also moves ~20 billions tons of water through evotranspiration, the so-called "flying rivers", critical for planetary balance. I wish more people knew this.

New PhD position in my group! If interested in plant molecular biology, CRISPR, transcriptomics and proteomics studies to understand how different abiotic stresses control plant growth and development then apply for this opportunity. Deadline - 19th of August 2024, see below.👇

✂️✍️ PART 1 – See how a botanical collection is made in the Sarawak rainforest with #TeamRBGE's Tropical Botanist Peter Wilkie! Collections made on this field trip will provide scientists with invaluable new material to support future research and conservation activities.

Today at the #IBC2024- perceived derogatory names of plants already published won't be changed. Kew's Director of Science supports this, claiming resources are best spent studying biodiversity. Why then, spend millions to move Kew's herbarium and disrupt studying biodiversity?

And that's just the cost of the building! Not to mention all the staff time taken already and the future plus costs of moving specimens, staff and collaboration across Kew's existing sites. It's a biodiversity crisis! Not the time to put the critical herbarium in a corner!! 🙏
