When reading a story to young children, it helps to have the main words on a display they can look at before, during and after story time. This will increase their opportunity to learn the vocabulary. #earlyyearspractitioner #education #earlyyearsideas #SLTchat #send #teacher

One communication act that predicts Autistic children’s later expressive language skills is their ability to use gestures paired with vocalizations e.g. holding up a plane and saying “whoosh,” or “vroom” etc. #autism #neurodiversityawareness #speechtherapyforkids #speechtherapy

Dancing to music is hugely beneficial. It feeds imagination, builds connection and interaction, develops vocabulary, encourages use of hand gestures/actions/facial expressions and provides opportunities to be expressive and explore feelings in a non-speaking way. #languagetherapy

Analytical language development is about breaking down language into its smallest parts (words) and then knowing how to put those words together to make sentences. It's like learning the alphabet before you can read books. Find out more: coventrychildrensslt.co.uk/families/talki… #speechandlanguage

Children with sensory processing challenges often struggle to regulate their sensory input, leading to difficulties in attending to the language used around them. Build in preferred sensory supports into the children's routine. #Autism #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent

Using visuals: Show a favourite object and a picture together. Use pictures to show the order of daily routines. Present two pictures for choices, like "milk or juice?" Put pictures on items around your home. See our website for more ideas: coventrychildrensslt.co.uk/families/aac/ #AAC #SLCN

Audiobooks help children hear correct grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Regular listening helps develop focus and attention and audiobooks can be less overwhelming than reading. You can find some on the Twinkl Bedtime podcast here: twinkl.co.uk/resources/well… #mySLTday

Sensory play helps children learn new words. If a child plays with playdough, they're experiencing the feeling of squishy and the word becomes connected to the sensory experience. This helps build a rich vocabulary. #mySLTday #SLTchat #earlyyears #speechandlanguagetherapy
