I had the distinct honor yesterday to ride combine with a producer harvesting PlainsGold Fortify SF. What a thrill to understand more about how that wheat has contributed to profitability on their farm. How lucky I was to spend my career as a wheat breeder.

The crew rescued a Swainson’s Hawk (I believe) from the headrow field yesterday and delivered it to the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program.

All the good conversation happens when five Colorado State University Deans, the Provost, Colorado Wheat and myself get together in a wheat field. What a great day to be a wheat breeder in Colorado!

A few last notes on the increases before the come out. We plant many more than we can handle, so a ton of data is analyzed and synthesized to decide what to harvest. One of the most nerve racking things about July for me. We will finish up harvest this week. Colorado Wheat

Plant breeding would be a whole lot easier if you selected for grain yield in a bubble, but what you end up selecting is a package of traits that collectively give you yield and hopefully stability and longevity for that variety.
