The sadness is that the corruptly awarded honours, though still a minority, increasingly discredit the entire system.

Three key features would be a) genuine independent assessment based on merit b) decisions not taken by politicians c) restricting any political donor to lower level honours only - and definitely no seats in the Lords

There are few parts of the British political system that are unambiguously corrupt. This is one of them.
