Lockdown is hard but essential. Students are playing their part but with no part-time work many are struggling. University hardship funds aren’t enough. Government must increase maintenance loans and grants to support the mental health & wellbeing of students. The crisis is now.

New! Why do so many people from privileged backgrounds identify as working-class?We find this rooted in elaborate ‘origin stories’ that downplay advantage in people’s own upbringing & instead forge affinities to working-class extended family histories1/journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…

A new book on Dolly Parton – out today, her 75th birthday – celebrates her as the antithesis to Trump, a 'unifying balm' amid divisiveness, tracking her trajectory from 'the punch line of a boob joke' to 'a universally beloved icon'. Read our review here: on.ft.com/3iu8eyj

Good morning, any person who does not wear a mask in a public place will be committing an offence. Let us all fight the pandemic fatigue and continue to rigorously adhere to the health protocols. #staySafe #PlatYourPart #COVID19SA

The decision to sit back and allow a new deep coal mine to open in this year of all years is deplorable. This project is not compatible with our country's #netzero pledge and it will not provide the long-term job security that Cumbrians deserve. bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…

Can we be as angry about fractional staff being exploited as we are about academic superstars being threatened with redundancy? They are part of the same problem, but one generates outrage and disbelief, the other is normalized

Sad to hear an ex colleague who I first met in prison has passed away. I remember the Governor telling me “if you can give this guy a job and he stays, I will be amazed. It’s impossible.” He stayed with us for 7 years and was a great hire.

Can politicians and media please stop the #vaccinegame. What matters is the one target - maximum protection for the most vulnerable. That’s why #carehomes are a priority. It takes a lot longer to vaccinate in a #carehome due to infirmity, frailty & dementia distress. #marr
