An interesting read from UCONN about CT's land use and how it's changed in just the last 35 years. Not a surprise that there's less agriculture and more land being developed - at a rate of 10 acres/day. ow.ly/eth230lrAgN

Here are two very similar perennials - Boltonia & Kalimeris. Each have light lavender daisy-like flowers with yellow centers, will grow approx. 18" tall and take full sun but only one of them is native to the US - Boltonia.

Bumblebees and honeybees LOVE Turtlehead (Chelone)! It's one of the greatest pollinator plants out there for both sun and shade. Not many plants can hold that crown.

Eubotrys (Swamp Sweetbells): at a glance it reminds us a little of Summersweet (Clethra): growing 4-6', it has glossy foliage and likes partial shade growing conditions. The flowers smell great too! One of its best characteristics is the awesome fall color! A+ 3 gallon size

Fall is prime time to seed new lawns. The days still have plenty of sun, warm temps and cool nights. Need a suggestion for turf seed? Give the Waterstar a try: Perennial Rye, Creeping Red Fescue, Chewing Fescue and Kentucky Blue. Stop in and check it out!

It's Labor Day Weekend - could that mean the Mums are in? Yes! Both sales yards has a nice selection of 8 & 12 inch pots filled with tightly budded Mums that are just starting to show color! It's time to start planning your fall containers and season plantings!

There's time to plant spring flowering bulbs before the ground freezes! Plant in the ground or in containers to force for early spring. FYI - we still have a great selection!

The extra cold temps may get you thinking about planting more cold hardy perennials. Hardy to Zone 3, these are a great place to start: Bleeding Heart, False Sunflower (pic 'Summer Nights'), Foxglove, Lady's Mantle, Lupines (pic Gallery Series) and Yarrow.

Except for being out in these super cold temps, now is a great time for winter pruning. All trees will benefit from 1. Removal of any dead/diseased branches 2. Removal of crossing/rubbing branches 3. Removal of water sprouts.

Ever plant Snowdrop Anemone (Anemone sylvestris)? It's a sweet May bloomer with a simple pure white flower. Great for naturalizing! ow.ly/NrEI30hKbT4 Stay tuned for other new plants coming for 2018!

Big thank you to all the wonderful farms that took part in last weekend’s “Know Your Farmer Fair” in #Willimantic. Had the chance to speak w/ local farmers & learn more about the work they are doing to expand the agricultural footprint in our region.
