Most of the electricity in the MISO system comes from natural gas and coal, especially when the sun isn’t out and the wind isn’t blowing. While wind and solar energy reduce reliance on fossil fuels, reliable power 24/7/365 requires a balanced, “all of the above” mix of resources.

Throughout National Co-op Month, we were proud to match donations to local volunteers from our Member co-ops! These funds honor individuals who were nominated for their contributions in this year’s Shine the Light contest sponsored by Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.

Even on windy days, traditional generation sources produce about half of the MISO system electricity. Wind and solar play a vital role, but 24/7 reliability requires a balanced, “all-of-the-above” energy mix. Here’s a snapshot of MISO’s energy sources from a windy day this fall:

Before the snow flies, CIPCO’s Travel Crew is making the most of clear fall skies! The crew strings wire along a 10.6-mile stretch near Grand River in southwest Iowa. The project involves 168 new poles and is essential to maintaining reliable service for our Member-owners.
