It's been a long, hard year. But it hasn't been without progress. After 2022, we are: ✅ Taking climate action through the #InflationReductionAct ✅Rebuilding communities through the #IIJA Locally, we made progress, too. This is just some of what happened for good this year.

After consistent community pressure, Port Houston committed publicly for the first time to a long-term goal of carbon neutrality, agreed to use cleaner equipment to expand the Ship Channel and rolled out a zero-emissions truck. edf.org/media/edf-appl…

Could 2022 be the beginning of *this* future? It's been a tough year, but we've made a lot of important progress, too, with big climate action and smaller attempts to monitor our air more closely and create more accountability. See more: change.onebreathhou.org

Yesterday, after equipment failed, TPC Group's Houston plant, looming over César E. Chavez High School in the East End, burned chemicals for about 2 hours — including >205 pounds of cancer-causing 1,3-butadiene, the chemical their Port Arthur plant leaked for months after a 2019 explosion. 🧵

A stronger regional haze plan will protect our national parks and our everyday health from the pollution from old-fashioned power plants like NRG Energy, Inc.'s W. A. Parish outside Houston. U.S. EPA South Central Region has the power to do both. #ParishIsBurning #ShutDownParish houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outloo…

What's changed so it never happens again? The CSB hasn't completed an investigation, but ITC has applied for a permit to keep operating. With lax enforcement, Texas' "honor system" for industry, Carolyn Stone, a Channelview resident, says, isn't working.

Sharon Rogers was "blown out of bed" by an explosion at ExxonMobil in 2021. The corporation has broken environmental laws thousands of times. But they keep appealing to avoid paying any damages. "It’s awful to have to always live in fear," Rogers says. washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…

Regulators repeatedly documented — but did little to address — problems at a Houston-area tank farm. Then on March 17, 2019, a fire blew through a corner of the facility, releasing toxic chemicals into nearby communities for weeks. Via Public Health Watch: bit.ly/40ICr13
