Yeah nah. The DM's job has ALWAYS been to entertain the players and provide "exciting" combat. It was less nuanced when the editions were simpler (1e with its 0hp=dead) and 3e/PF's CR was a bit messy for DMs lacking experience. If you're a good DM, you know how to predict combat.
