In 2022, the 6888th was awarded the Congressional Gold Meda for its accomplishments during World War II. And in 2023, Fort Lee was redesignated as Fort Gregg-Adams to honor both LTC Adams & LTG Arthur Gregg. #WomensHistoryMonth 5/5

The 99th Readiness Division hosted a Women’s History Month “Lunch & Learn” event March 19 highlighting the U.S. Army’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The “Six Tripple Eight” was the first-and-only all-Black, all-female Army unit to deploy overseas during World War II.

In February 1945, the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion deployed–becoming the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve in Europe in WWII. They were led by Major Charity Adams, the highest-ranking Black woman in the U.S. Army during WWII.

On March 29, 1941, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited Tuskegee’s airfield, and met Charles Alfred Anderson, the first, and at that time only, African American. It was the first time in history that a First Lady of the U.S. flew with a black man at the controls.
