I really, really loved this book, which catalogues the history of a California cult, traces the arc of Orange County’s once thriving and now barren gay-bar-and-group-sex scene, and studies the nature of rats and rat culture after a rodent takes refuge on the narrator’s roof.

I've read a lot of great writing since joining this community this year, and, in the face of steep competition, Foreclosure Gothic by Harris Lahti takes the crown. It's ambitious and rich, full of great scenes and atmosphere, and deeply memorable. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
