Very happy to announce that I've been promoted to senior editor Sportsnet. I'm happier still to see Sonny Sachdeva, Thomas Ketko and Josh Beneteau also get rewarded for their absolutely tireless and inspiring efforts on the news desk. You truly love to see it.

Some words on Andrei Denyskin, Jalen Smereck and why we won't find meaningful progress until all within this sport better understand the full weight of the damage done by racist acts like Denyskin's. sportsnet.ca/hockey/article…

Writing about hockey means getting to write about, speak with and learn from some pretty incredible women year-round. Writing this piece is a way to check in w the sport and highlight the biggest stories + questions in hockey through the lens of the women shaping it right now.

In first 10 months of Ontario’s rapid test program, only 1/5 went to hotspots. Data obtained by Sara Mojtehedzadeh & Rachel Mendleson show tests mostly went to those with resources, knowledge or connections - like private schools & auto parts company Linamar: thestar.com/news/investiga…

Let’s count the ridiculous things here. 1) People need housing, but they’re hiring private security. 2) Parks need to be better maintained, but they’re hiring private security. 3) The city already spends a billion dollars a year on police, but they’re hiring private security.

"after the bike lanes were installed, both the number of monthly customers served and monthly spending increased. We also learned that only 7% of our customers were using cars to shop along Bloor Street"

If you heard Doug Ford say only 1.2% of Torontonians bike to work and thought, "That can't be true" — you're right. The real number is around 10%. Add in errands & socializing: 44%. Add in all cycling: 70%. And growing. 🔓 No paywall #onpoli thetrillium.ca/news/municipal…

In summary, Ford's bike lane removals will, according to a new City Hall report: - Cost $75 million in direct costs and sunk costs. - Make traffic much, much worse for at least nine months during construction to remove lanes - Have minimal long-term impact on car travel times.

That's interesting given cars moved faster along Adelaide after the bike lane was installed & speed limit lowered. Driver comfort up from 5.2 to 8.1 out of 10 & car collisions down 18%. Number of people biking went up 1,194% & more people bike than drive at rush hour ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had to leave to write it up. TLDR: The Ford government says main street bike lanes are bad. Municipalities, businesses, road safety advocates and the City of Toronto call BS. No paywall 🔓 #onpoli #topoli thetrillium.ca/news/municipal…

New: A draft document prepared for cabinet said prohibiting bike lanes doesn’t solve traffic congestion — and often has the opposite effect. From Aidan Chamandy and I, with a big assist from Jessica Smith Cross. #onpoli #topoli thetrillium.ca/news/municipal…

Aidan Chamandy A new amendment states that there can be no lawsuits against the province and cabinet due to bike lane removals. “Obviously, what they're trying to do is wash their hands of the blood that will be spilled,” The Biking Lawyer (Dave Shellnutt) said. #onpoli #topoli thetrillium.ca/news/municipal…

#BREAKING - The Auditor General finds the Ford governments Ontario place redevelopment costs have ballooned by $1.8 billion, now potentially costing taxpayers a total of $2.2B. It finds building a new Science Centre will cost $700M, more than keeping it at its current location.
