My father, Patrick, was granted the licence to the curacy of Haworth today in 1820. He would make the five/six mile journey from Thornton as needed to avoid uprooting his family unnecessarily if the congregation forced him to resign.

Charlotte Bronte bought her great friend Mary Taylor, born #otd 1817, a cow after she emigrated to New Zealand! She became a successful businesswoman, a feminist journalist, a travel writer, novelist and mountaineer! Mary is on the left here, climbing in Switzerland in 1874!

Did you know that the very first Bronte biography wasn't Elizabeth Gaskell's 1857 'Life of Charlotte Bronte' but rather 'Jottings on Currer, Ellis & Acton Bell' by the mysterious 'W.P.P'? Here's a fascinating review from May 1856 in the Monmouthshire Merlin:

On #WorldPoetryDay I have, of course, to pay tribute to the incredible, powerful, spiritual poetry of Emily Bronte that I love! Writing my book on her poetry and life was a sheer joy, so here are two of Emily's incredible poems from it:

Reading the feedback for our The Unthanks audio experience is one of our favourite jobs at the moment. There's still time to take part... #EmilyBronte #Haworth

My older sister, Charlotte, died today in 1855, at the age of 39. She was the last of my siblings to die, but was survived by our father.

In my new post we look at Virginia Woolf's journey to Haworth, and we also remember Sylvia Plath and, of course, Charlotte Bronte who died #otd 1855: annebronte.org/2019/03/31/vir…

#otd 1846 a letter was sent to poetry publishers Aylott & Jones from one of their new poets, a chap named Currer Bell, offering a series of novels from he and his brothers. They turned it down but this was the first notice that the Bronte sisters had turned to novel writing!
