24 June 1314. Robert the Bruce defeated Edward II’s English forces at the Battle of Bannockburn during the 1st War of Scottish Independence. Though it did not bring overall victory in the war, which would go on for 14 more years, it was a landmark in Scottish history.

6 August 1881. Nobel prize-winning scientist Alexander Fleming was born in Lochfield, Scotland. He discovered penicillin which was later turned into a life-saving antibiotic drug by Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and their colleagues at Oxford University.
