#OnThisDay in 1985 (40 years ago), German writer and Nobel laureate Heinrich Böll died. His novels - including "The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum" and "Billiards at Half-Past Nine" - brilliantly capture post-war West German society, and his works continue to be read in schools 📗

#OnThisDay: 🇩🇪-🇬🇧 cellist 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗿-𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵 is 100 today. A member of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra, she testified against leading Nazis after the war. She went on to co-found the English Chamber Orch & work tirelessly to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive.
