On 22nd September 1934 at Gresford Colliery, Wales, an explosion killed 266 men & boys underground. 6 survived and only 11 bodies were ever recovered. The wages of all were docked by half a days pay by the owners because the men had 'failed to complete their shift.'

Why do I have this look on my face? -Moyra Samuels, key #Grenfell activist, just told me TSG police TERRIFIED displaced residents after the fire by walking around with GUNS. When challenged they said ‘The Muslims are going to riot’! LISTEN NOW portobelloradio.com

Freedom Ship, Marcus Rediker's new book is available for pre-order. Marcus's work has inspired the work of all of us writing about the Atlantic slave trade and he has been a very generous supporter of my work and the work of many others #slaveryarchive penguinrandomhouse.com/books/566407/f…

In 1755 a panic spread through Bristol when the Avon suddenly drained of all water. The phenomenon was caused by an earthquake and a tsunami off the coast of Portugal. Lisbon was almost destroyed and much of Europe and Africa was devastated but Bristol was mercifully spared.

Sense of time and place in this shot by Jewish Austrian photographer Margaret Michaelis. Arrival of British Medical Unit at Portbou on Spanish Repub border. Last week 29 August 1936, apparently 5am in the morning. En route for Grañen on Aragón front + then near Jarama + elsewhere

🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨 Charity for Disabled children funnelling over 40% of its funds to right-wing think-tanks. Utterly shocking - an example of what happens when disability organisations aren't run by us, for us, with lived-experience at the forefront. goodlawproject.org/disabled-child…

It was great to meet the new owners of the historic Robin Hood pub on St Michael's Hill in Bristol, who fought off competition from nine other buyers who wanted to turn the pub into flats 👏 bristolworld.com/lifestyle/food…

Last night's CRIME & CRINOLINES IN CLIFTON tour And everybody dry! Rain stopped, we met people we knew, people we didn't & gathered apples on Royal York Crescent. Clifton's full of stories - this plaque marks an early women's suffrage society meeting in 1868. Pic Hannah Hurcom
