A2 - I have started doing Yoga and it so grounding. Zoom tea parties with friends and family, baking, reading by the fire, board games and card games. Finding joy in the little things.

A3 Ss may react differently than in class. Some will advocate for themselves and seek support, others withdraw. We must get to know our Ss in this new classroom. It's like Sept - it will take time to get to know how the ELLs we knew face2face react in this new envir'y. #ellchat

A5 - Just as this chat began with asking us about our own mental health, my admin put their staff's mental health at the start of every communication. We can't support our students' mental health if we aren't doing it for ourselves as well. Oxygen mask on yourself first. #ellchat

A1: I'm Briare, from Ontario, Canada. I teach Reading Recovery and recently, some ESL support. We're officially entering week 2 of remote learning. #ellchat

A2: I'm really concerned about our littlest learners who are learning to read and write at the same time as learning English. They can't use translation to access curriculum. It requires significant parental support, which may not be possible. #ellchat

A3: our district's plan: Parental surveys about access to tech, classroom teachers calling every family to find out about access to tech, rollout of tech to those without access has begun. Slow process, but trying to provide access to all. #ellchat

What if, instead of assuming kids will return with "loss" "slide" "gaps" and in need of remediation. We planned to welcome them all as creative, gifted, talented. Would would the conversations look like with these principles re-mediating it? apa.org/ed/schools/tea…

Hi everyone! I'm Briare - a Reading Recovery teacher (ESL-focused role during remote learning). I'm from Ontario, Canada #rrchat

A1 - I'm hoping we can foster gratitude & creativity. Gratitude for each other and rel'ps we have built within our schools. The power of human connection. Creativity comes in moments of pause and 'boredom'. Many Ss now have many moments to create and imagine like never b4 #rrchat

A3 - I feel strongly that the social emotional learning is what needs to be the priority now. Writing/Reading/Oral assignments that give Ss a voice to discuss and reveal how they are feeling. Modelling our emotions in our online classroom streams and chats. #rrchat

A3 - Using Google classroom, I have found that differentiating and NOT assigning (or modifying) some of tasks for some Ss allows us to really support what THEY need - it might be different Ss you are modifying for than in the classroom. Knowing our Ss AND families is key. #rrchat

A4 - We can't address academic needs until ALL our Ss can access the curriculum. The inequities present b4 covid are magnified now. So many of our ELLs and struggling readers and writers can't even access the curriculum yet. Many families are struggling and can't support. #rrchat

If you are being mandated to sit through PD that tells you essentially everything you’ve learned and experienced is wrong and the majority of your teaching should be whole group, one size fits all, scripted lessons- it’s not about growing you- it’s about growing their product.

Effective specialist co-teachers usually have no more than 2-4 classrooms on their caseload. Very often they serve one grade level only. Expecting the same outcomes from a model with one MLL (ESL) teacher with 28+ classes and 3+ schools on their caseload is simply not realistic.
