1/ A long, detailed Friday thread about what's happening with the Biden Free Community College plan and the tricky choices Democrats are going to have to make. Keep reading: billions of dollars are at stake!

Sometimes you get rejected for a job you really wanted and you’re sad. That’s when you go play with your brother’s cat, and then you’re happy. (And then the cat follows you for the next two hours while you’re trying to submit more resumes)

I see a lot of thoughts about sourcing and hiring practices, but I am in LOVE with this deep dive on making sure your retention numbers are supporting your recruiting strategy. hbr.org/2019/05/your-a…

Brother's girlfriend: [Your brother] uses so many fancy words! I want to too, but I want to make sure I'm using them right, you know? Like I'd be so embarrassed if I used the wrong one. Me: Wow, that's very equatorial of you.

My dad (a manager and engineer) asked me if I'd read this yet and forwarded it to me when I said I hadn't. Want to keep your team motivated in insurmountable odds? This is a good read. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

I'm attending a HireX career fair today and I'm really confused. Why couldn't I see what employers would be at the fair before it started? Why are there only 18 jobs available in the portal? Why are more than half of them manufacturing? Is this how all career fairs are?

I spent the past day and a half reading through every one of Polygon’s investigations into animated failures. (As a former ling major, I of course saved Atlantis for last.) Next time you think your work/project flopped, read one of these. polygon.com/animation-cart…

Talk about a paradigm shift! @Verge makes it clear why I follow the filing system and why my students (and some of my friends) dump all their documents in one place. @cosmoslibrarian have you encountered this with the younger people at JPL? theverge.com/22684730/stude…

Finally got around to framing my GORGEOUS city maps. From top to bottom I have London (where I visited twice), Tokyo (where I lived for four years) and Hong Kong (where I visited for four days). To see in detail, check out the original prints: archiespress.com

Some days job hunting means submitting resumes and preparing for interviews. Other days it means finishing a book in your pajamas (The Hate U Give—wow!), going to the gym, and baking pumpkin bread during a downpour. It’s the little things that keep you going.

So glad to see the conversation on burnout continuing with ⁦Anne Helen Petersen⁩ at the helm. I just left a job I’d burnt out at before COVID, but it was tempered by a contract-mandated 4-day work week. I’d love to see that practice become more widespread. apple.news/AdDUBgVRYSVaqu…

Step 1: Fill basket with filter and coffee Step 2: Fill carafe with water Step 3: Turn on coffee maker Step 4: “Why don’t I hear brewing?” Step 5: 🤬 Step 6: Pour water into back of coffee maker to be dripped I call it the “Four Interviews Down, Two to Go” process.

I found taiyaki in Denver! It cost $7 (vs. $2 / ¥200 in Japan), but I also get five of them in one order, so 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, perfect pick-me-up after a long job interview

Just found a note in my to-do list from June 2021: "Emailed back [name] about possible video chat times (she wants to use Zoom? Why? I’ve never heard of it)" Those were the days.

This guy just plopped himself onto the train, pulled out a full picnic breakfast from his messenger bag, then called halfway across the car to the security guard that the heated seats aren’t working
