It's worth considering how much of today's expansive police role arose as unintended consequences of the portable radio and the telephone rather than a thoughtful approach to how government can best protect & serve people. As historians and theorists, these two scholars are tops.

The role of alcohol sales practices in facilitating violence is under appreciated. Considering other public safety harms connected to alcohol misuse in late hours, public health approaches to public safety should include limiting alcohol sales hours.

I've seen police use of the f-bomb both assert control that foreclosed the use of force, and escalated a situation to violence. This is the first study I am aware of to parse the nuances.

PhD students: external funding can help you too. Imagine not needing to teach or provide RA support to cover your tuition/stipend, during the year or over the summer.

Ask your advisor how much it would cost to buy out your TA/RA requirement, & apply for funding thru this RFP:

Boston has had just 2 homicides so far in 2024. Adjusting for population, that would be like Chicago having 8. But it's had 102. Homicides don't just befall cities, their governments can reduce them. It takes a comprehensive approach, and requires both public health and policing.

In Nozick's theory in Anarchy, State and Utopia, there comes a point in the state of nature where warring gangs realize they can benefit from an alliance, bringing them one step closer to forming a state themselves.

Life is imitating theory in Haiti.

Soldiers have none of the training and skills necessary to handle the myriad crimes and crises that spring up in the subways and require police, Brandon del Pozo, PhD, MPA, MA writes.
