Most boot camps focus on theory and NOT on real-life scenarios. If you don’t bridge the gap between what you've learned and real life applications, you won’t be able to solve problems for your workplace. This means your value in the workplace isn’t as significant as it could be.

A boot camp is an accelerated learning experience. A LOT of details in a relatively short amount of time. If you are not allocating the proper time to learn and digest the information, then the boot camp experience is not going to be one that you’ll remember or use.

Many folks in boot camps see something that doesn't make sense to them, and completely ditch the process. Bad Idea. You're paying people to give their expert advice on how to take your career to the next level, so you need to trust the experts and follow the process.

Certifications don’t work when it comes to leveling up your salary and position. Why? Because passing a test does not mean you are good at your job. My advice: focus on becoming a master of a skill set that brings value, then you’ll get paid.

Here’s an exception to my rule that certifications aren’t going to guarantee you a salary: The OSCP- Offensive Security Professional Certification. Because you have to perform real hacking in the exam, it proves your skill set. That skill will practically guarantee 6-figures.

Search for jobs by the skill, instead of the title. Then when you look at a job posting, you can determine whether it aligns with your talents and abilities…and you’ll already be ahead of the game.

Want to get into tech, but have no coding experience? You need to look at the GRC (governance risk and compliance) space. Check out jobs like cybersecurity auditor, compliance analyst, and IT risk analyst. They may not get the shine they deserve, but they bring in a big paycheck.

If you’re in the position of working on one contract at a time and then scrambling for work again…you’re making the same mistake I once did. You’re working yourself out of a job! There’s a much better way, which I’ll talk about in my next post. Stay tuned.
