#AgriClimate2025. Dr Karl Richards showed how agriculture can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the use of fertilisers. This can be achieved by improving soil fertility, incorporating clover & multispecies swards, using low emission slurry spreading & using digestate.

#AgriClimate2025. Dr Dominika Krol spoke about how reducing agri-nitrous oxide starts with better manure and grazing management. Clover, plantain, and multispecies swards cut urinary N. Anaerobic digestion, nutrient recovery, and novel treatments offer more solutions.

#AgriClimate2025. Dr Bridget Lynch spoke about the use of diverse swards, including clover and plantain that boost milk yield while cutting chemical nitrogen use. They fix N naturally, lower emissions, and support soil, water, and climate health.

#AgriClimate2025. Dr Giulia Bondi revealed that Irish mineral soils are a net carbon source. Tracking change needs long-term data. NASCO shows deeper soils hold 48–200 t C/ha and may sequester more than thought. Improve soil fertility, swards, hedgerows, and grazing helps.

#AgriClimate2025. According to Dr Matthew Saunders peatlands hold 74% of Ireland’s soil carbon on just 24% of land. Drained grasslands emit carbon, but water table management can cut emissions. More research is needed to guide policy and explore carbon removal options.

#AgriClimate2025. Dr Ken Byrne showed forests play a key role in carbon sequestration, especially on mineral soils. But Ireland faces a “carbon cliff” as afforestation slows & older forests shift from sink to source. Rewetting peatlands & sustainable use of biomass are crucial.
