Bolsa Chica Biodiversity Day 1: plankton In the water, plankton are weak swimmers that move along with the currents. These microscopic living things are teensy-tiny, but are important to the wetlands. In fact, they are the base of the food web because all of life depends on them.

The California Towhee (Melozone crissalis) is a favorite visitor around our Growing Space on Bolsa Chica's Mesa. A member of the Sparrow family, they don't attract much attention with their dull brown color, unless you catch a glimpse of their red bottoms. 📷 : Eric Benson

Bolsa Chica Biodiversity Day 7: birds Arguably the highlight of Bolsa Chica is the birds. We get 2 migrations each year because we are along the Pacific Flyway. That’s what makes Bolsa Chica an important bird refuge with more than 250 bird species recorded here. 📷 Tammy Asaki

Bolsa Chica Biodiversity Day 8: mammals Here at Bolsa Chica, coyotes have their role to play, and it would be very detrimental to the Bolsa Chica ecosystem if we eliminate the coyotes who call Bolsa Chica home. We need to do our part to keep the coyotes wild. 📷 Mike Zampelli

Honk if you've heard or seen the geese fly by in the morning/evening! Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are the most common goose seen at Bolsa Chica. The sight and sound of them flying in a vee formation and their “hwonk” is a daily fall and winter event. 📷 Katrina Plummer
