Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder affecting 17,000 people in England, with 250 new diagnoses yearly. It causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped which can lead to a blood condition, haemolytic anaemia, when they’re destroyed faster than they’re replaced. 2/x

It’s an inherited condition, most common among people of Black African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern & South Asian heritage. Severity varies from person to person with symptoms from tiredness and shortness of breath to sickle cell crises in which severe pain can last for days. 3/x

Other symptoms include being prone to infection, delayed growth, strokes, lung problems and sight loss. It affects children and adults. Many need daily medication and regular blood transfusions. The disease and its treatment can have a huge impact on patients’ lives. 4/x
