My latest for The New York Times: For decades, recordings left at studios have languished in storage rooms and basements. Master Tape Rescue, a company of two industry vets, is coming to save them. The story will be in Sunday’s print edition of the NYT.

Diane Thomas was a waitress when she made headlines for the script sale of what would become a box office smash. But the Cinderella story had a sad ending. nyti.ms/3PPqqEk

My son just described The Boondock Saints as “Limp Bizkit Matrix” and I’ve never heard anything more accurate.

On the 40th anniversary of 'Romancing the Stone,' I wrote about the film’s screenwriter Diane Thomas, a Hollywood Cinderella story who died tragically young. Spoke with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner & more for the piece, out in Sunday’s New York Times. nytimes.com/2024/03/29/mov…

Cannot wait to read this. Mr. Kaplan is one of our country's finest writers. His two-volume biography of Frank Sinatra - 'The Voice' & 'The Chairman' - is an absolutely towering achievement. Do yourself a favor and pick those up and grab the new bestseller, '3 Shades of Blue.’

Sad news in Memphis music: J.M. 'Jimmy' Van Eaton has died at 86. One of the last surviving figures from the golden age of Sun Records, Van Eaton made his reputation playing drums for Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Lee Riley, etc. More on his life and career here: commercialappeal.com/story/entertai…

“It’s almost like I’ve been listening to Tim with a cold for 20 years. And now I can actually hear it.”

Here's why the Replacements’ Tim is the best reissue of 2023 ↓ p4k.in/To6RWd8

I was incredibly resistant to even listening to the remix of TIM — one of my favorite albums for a lot of different reasons — but LET IT BLEED is just absurd. It is like a What If… where The Replacements weren’t such a mess and they became superstars.

“I just gave him a bass amp and guitar and away we went.” Happy birthday to the late great Bob Stinson – guitarist, co-founder, big brother, and heart & soul of The Replacements – born Dec. 17, 1959. (Interview by Steve Birmingham, 1994).

Finally saw the HBO doc 'Arthur Miller: Writer.' Was reminded of an interview I did with Winona Ryder for my Replacements bio Trouble Boys. She recalled working with Miller on The Crucible & playing him a buncha songs off Tim. Miller was like ATTENTION MUST BE PAID TO WESTERBERG!

Check out The Pitchfork Review podcast as they rave about the Replacements' Tim: Let It Bleed Edition. Hearing this kind of genuine enthusiasm-from jaded rock critics, no less-is particularly gratifying. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the…
