StellarSpin Shadow is THE Modern Sonic rival, his conflicting morals and personal gripes with Sonic's attitude and beliefs is part of what makes their dynamic in particular so intriguing. Removing it in favor of him being more friendly would intrude on Knuckles role and leave his role empty.
StellarSpin Truthfully though, I admit I just enjoy watching these two beat each other up.
