It's September&our new #birdofthemonth is the humble redshank. Easily identified by their red legs& reddish beak at the base, redshanks are common overwintering birds& some even breed on our coast. Despite this, they're on the UK AmberList due to changing agricultural practices.

Bird Aware Essex Coast Lovely pic of a Redshank! The species is so nearly red-listed - with major losses from estuarine breeding areas. This thread may be of interest: x.com/GrahamFAppleto…

Happy #MigrationMonday. Our brent geese are starting to come back and we're excited! They've been busy nesting in Siberia& will spend their winter on our coastal sites. Did you know that Essex is the wintering home of a 1/4 of the whole world's population of dark bellied brents?

Happy #waderwednesday. Our birds left the HighArctic& are landing on our shores now. They're starved& exhausted. Any disruption of their feeding or resting could endanger their lives. Please give them plenty of space and don't allow your dogs to chase them under any circumstances

It's Friday the13th. If you're someone who gets worried about having a back luck on such days, we are sending you a lovely teal duck. Teals are just landing back on our coast after breeding around the Baltic& Siberia. Seeing their vibrant colours has to brighten up anyone's day!

#WaderWednesday Spoonbills are a spectacle! Related to Ibises, they hunt aquatic prey by sweeping from side to side through water. After a 300 year gap, they're breeding here again. Many have been spotted at Wrabness, Old Hall Marshes, Tollesbury &of course Abberton Reservoir.

The Essex coast is also getting busier by the day. Waders& wildfowl are arriving starved and exhausted, so please remember avoiding disturbances at any cost, whether from land or water, whether birds feed or rest (both equally important). Thank you 🙏🦆🦤#migratorymonday

It was hard to select a few images from my trip to Snettisham, here are just a few hopefully portrays the fantastic explosion and then the calm when there are very high tides. This was my first visit to see the spectacular and one I will no doubt never forget. With Stephen Harper EFIAP BPE3*
