A historic rate of intensification has brought Erin to elite, borderline cat 5 intensity this morning. Thankfully, the track forecast has not changed a whole lot. We have the details here: open.substack.com/pub/theeyewall…

Erin is only the 5th Category 5 hurricane on record to form this early in the hurricane season and the only Category 5 observed outside the Gulf or Caribbean this early in the year.

In today’s post we discuss our increasing rain chances for this week, with a wet period most likely from Thursday through Saturday. We also dig deep into an outlook for the rest of the Atlantic hurricane season. spacecityweather.com/taking-stock-o…

Erin will be a significant concern in the Outer Banks in terms of coastal impacts. Otherwise, beach erosion, tidal flooding, and rip currents will pester the entire East Coast through the week. Details on all this and the latest on the next wave today: open.substack.com/pub/theeyewall…

Daily chance of showers and thunderstorms continues through at least the end of the week. Some storms locally heavy. Seasonably hot and humid conditions to prevail. #HOUwx #TXwx

1pm and the afternoon’s round of showers and storms are starting to bubble up. A weak front may boost the number of storms a bit, but we’re largely looking for the usual summertime scattering to carry with us into the early evening. Be wary for gusty winds in the strongest cells!

Gully-washer of a storm out west of Houston this evening. Without much in the way of directional forcing, this storm is benefiting from continuous training as a stationary cell and just dumping rain with frequent lightning. #houwx

Watch this explosion of activity over Galveston Bay. Look at how quickly it ignites. Lightning galore. Gorgeous. #houwx #txwx

Some of you may have had a rude awakening this AM. More shower and storm chances will continue for Houston today & Sat. Overall, coverage and intensity of storms should drop off this weekend and early next week. Matt has the latest on that and the tropics: spacecityweather.com/tolerable-not-…

“Summary...Slow-moving convection continues to expand in coverage this morning, with areas of 2-3 inch/hr rain rates becoming likely beneath the strongest storms. Flash flooding is expected.” Flash flood guidance as low as 1-1.5”/hr is low for the area. Stay aware. #houwx #txwx

One of my all-time personal favorite fork lightning shots. Taken today around 11:40amCT near midtown-ish Houston. #houwx #txwx
