UPDATE from the Capitol Spectrum News DC
In Nov, 2.1 million LA voters passed Measure J, which permanently changed the County Charter to require at least 10% of Net County Cost (NCC) to be invested in alternatives to incarceration, and directly to Black & impacted communities Hilda Solis #FullyFundMeasureJ #CareNotCages
This year’s NCC is estimated @ over $9 billion. 10% of that is at least $900 million, which should go to directly impacted communities. We are calling on you Hilda Solis to #FullyFundMeasureJ !
The LA County CEO released a memo to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors that gave Measure J ONLY $100 million for the 2021-22 county budget. Community had NO say in the decision. #ParticipatoryBudgeting is essential to make sure our tax revenues fund the right services. #FullyFundMeasureJ
A Budget is a statement about our values. LA County CEO and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors cannot continue to champion “Care First, Jails Last” unless those values are actually reflected in the budget. #FullyFundMeasureJ #CareNotCages
The LA County CEO is calling Measure J a “new program” when in fact it is a MANDATE voted into law. I urge Hilda Solis to do right by LA County voters and #FullyFundMeasureJ.
At the Tuesday's Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting, Janice Hahn said that the LA County CEO should find $50 million more for Measure J’s first year of implementation. I applaud her request and believe that Sup. Hahn should trust the voters––and her values. #FullyFundMeasureJ
Participatory budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which folks from the community get to decide on how to spend part of a public budget. It gives people “real power over real money.” That’s what we need in LA County to #FullyFundMeasureJ Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors LA County CEO
Long Beach is using a form of #ParticipatoryBudgeting (PB) to support community engagement, integration, & power-sharing. The LA County CEO and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors need to give the community a bigger say on where dollars go. #FullyFundMeasureJ
There have been community-initiated #ParticipatoryBudgeting (PB) processes like the #CareFirst Budget Survey & Report developed by @justicelanow, but LA County CEO and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors have never fully leveraged a real PB process. Give the people a real voice and #FullyFundMeasureJ
We need a #ParticipatoryBudgeting process. #BlackLivesMatter-LA led the #PeoplesBudgetLA who produced a report detailing data, insights, and budget demands based on engagement with tens of thousands of Angelenos. You can take the survey here: ctt.ec/D34H8+
