Abandoning the Renters’ Reform Bill as parliament dissolves means the government has failed in its promise to renters at the last election to deliver a fairer tenancy system. 🚨

Renters deserve better.

Seems the Renters’ Reform will not pass before election. 2019 manifesto promise to end no fault evictions will be broken. Months of work by stakeholders tossed aside. Delays caused by wrangling with backbenchers while evictions surged. More than 4m households left in precarity.

🚨Government fail to deliver no-fault evictions manifesto commitment🚨

Announcement the General Election will be 4th July confirms the gvt will not fulfill its promise to renters, as unprotected from eviction now as they were in 2019

This crisis will fall to the next government

Government promises broken, with homelessness and poverty being the direct result. Renters deserve so much better.

.Ben Twomey says the priority for the next Government should be to end Section 21 evictions and limit the way in which rent can be raised.

Pleased to be quoted in this for Generation Rent speaking about positive noises from the Labour front bench on rent stabilisation, the importance of it for under-pressure tenants, and the most effective ways to implement it. Look at the mayoralties!

Our Press Officer Paul was on BBC Essex last week talking about how the Renters (Reform) Bill has been watered down by the government.
Renters make up a fifth of households in England - all parties should have clear policies to improve private renting.

As Tom Darling says in this article by Tarah Welsh, it's no wonder landlords now welcome the watered down Renters (Reform) Bill - it upholds the balance of power that has created the renting crisis we have today.
The bill must be fixed or it will fail.

'The stresses of finding and funding a tenancy mean that a tenant will not usually give notice unless something is seriously wrong'

Lib Dem housing lead Baroness Thornhill clearly outlined why the six month 'tenant trap' is not necessary and would be harmful in practice.

Labour peer Baroness Lister noted our calls for peers 'to focus on the inadequacies of the new tenancy system' in the Bill.

It's concerning the eviction notice period remains two months 'despite over 100 council leaders urging an increase to four months'.

Bishop Housing lead Guli Francis-Dehqani questioned the changed definition of 'anti-social behaviour' in ASB evictions and made the case for some of our top priorities - including giving renters a longer eviction notice period, and calling for judges to retain their discretion in court.

Some highlights from the Bill's 2nd reading last week 🧵

'A cloud hangs over what was the centrepiece of the Bill: the fundamental issue of renters’ security'

Crossbencher Lord Best highlights three areas renters' security would still be undermined by the Bill as written

Section 21 is a root cause of housing instability and homelessness.

We need our homes to be safe, and know we can complain to our landlords if they aren't without fear of eviction

As Ben Twomey explains, the Renters Reform Bill must address this to solve the housing crisis

Thank you Lord Best, Baroness Lister and Baroness Thornhill (among others) for your tireless commitment to improving renters.

We appreciate the shout-outs and look forward to continuing to work with you as we push for the changes this legislation desperately needs.

With the inflation shock almost over, there's a cornucopia of fantastic charts in today's Resolution Foundation stocktake of what just happened. Here's a handful of the best:
