Libertarians argue that capitalism is superior to socialism because in capitalism anyone is free to do anything — including start a worker cooperative. In truth, capitalism constrains our options, while socialism can liberate us to live as we please.

Good piece by Ben Burgis for Jacobin. I've been thinking for a long time about writing a piece on the worthwhile libertarian arguments about cooperatives , and Ben does a great job of stating some core responses.

To create a society with the most freedom possible, we need to meet everyone’s material needs and give everyone a meaningful say over what happens in their workplaces and how revenue is distributed.

In my latest for Jacobin, I address Nozick’s argument that free market capitalism is a “framework for utopias” and anyone who cares about workplace democracy can just start a coop:

Happy May Day!

Excellent time to subscribe to Jacobin.

You can get a year of print issues today for the cost of two milkshakes at a 50s nostalgia diner in 1994:

You can be very concerned that people making political demands about US foreign policy are doing coded 'antisemitism' or you can deride the kids for all being snowflakes who catastrophize everything but for god's sake pick.

Per Columbia radio there is an unconscious student in front of Hamilton Hall. Safe safe safe. Glad the students are safe.

Instead of all this, Columbia could simply not invest in Lockheed Martin and other companies profiting off occupation and genocide.

Let this be a lesson to Uni administrators: it is impossible to appease these reactionaries, whether they are politicians, donors, or powerful alumni.

No amount of repression against anti-war and anti-apartheid students is ever enough for them.

In 1968, Columbia waited a week to clear out the students occupying Hamilton Hall.

When anti-apartheid protesters occupied it in 1985, it lasted 3 weeks and ended w/o arrests.

This time they brought in the NYPD same-day.

The right's narrative is still 'Columbia let it happen.'

Relevant to my chat last night w/db and Daniel Steinmetz-Jenkins about their (excellent) Jacobin piece on liberal 'fascism' discourse--a discourse which is, I'd argue, very unhelpful in locating and mobilizing people against the genuine sources of authoritarianism in American life.

When I was listening to Dead Pundits Society in, like, 2018, the idea that Aimee would get to the point that she'd be angrily defending very online ultra-trad-caths for agreeing with Jordan Peterson that the Pope is a devil-worshipper that would have...surprised me.
