3/3 Through the round window in Halifax Minster. Flowers, foliage and a set of arms, Castleford I think. Georgian, I presume.

My dad read me Njal's Saga as a bedtime story when I was pre-school age. Very vivid impression of when Njal and his whole family get burned to death in their longhouse. Years later dad told me he assumed I wouldn't remember that bit.

"An unsympathetic use and an appalling conversion" says Pevsner Guides of the former St Michael's Church in the High Street of Stamford, Lincolnshire. What should become of "redundant" churches?

The Bath House, Bath Row, cheers me, rain or shine, on my walk from the station whenever I visit Stamford. It was built in 1823 in suitably rustic coursed rubble, with "Gothic" windows, stone slates and a marvellous central pinnacle. Now a house. Listed Grade II.

This splendid building in Broad Street, Stamford, was the Stag and Pheasant Inn in the 19th century, and the New Salutation in 1799. Its mid-18th-century façade conceals an earlier building. Listed Grade II.

A bit of a shambles. This portico in Stamford High St resembles Inigo Jones's St Paul's Covent Garden. Designed William Legg; built 1804 as entrance to shambles (butchers' stalls) with open front. In 1906, enclosed as public library. Listed Grade II, as is phone box beside it.
