#ThrowbackThursday to c1870 where you can actually see the 16th century oak panel paintings of Sir Beovis and the giant Ascupart in situ! 🎨 The paintings have survived to this day despite being centuries old and are currently stored in the Bargate #Southampton #History

1611 map. It is thought ‘Bitterne’ derives from the Old English ‘byht’ meaning a bend in the river and ‘aern’ meaning a house. It’s written as ‘Byterne’ in 1090s. Bishops used a manor here, Edward I gave it to them in 1284. Manor was on the site of the Roman town of Clausentum.

The 800 year old Bargate was bricked up during the Blitz and used as an air raid shelter. The worst nights of Southampton’s Blitz came in 1940, on 23 November, 30 November, and 1 December. Bombs destroyed much of the area around it, but rather miraculously the Bargate survived.
