One good thing (possibly the only good thing) about driving across country at this time of year is the incredible autumn colours. I think this is the first time I have ever seen them quite so breathtakingly beautiful

I went for an amazing walk yesterday up over the moors. Fantastic views. Glorious sunshine and a spooky return as it grew dark. There were circling red kites and golden eagles.That’s the clue. It was all in my head. It’s gone into my novel. What a pity I can’t count the steps…

We may only be in the yellow zone for the wind, but I have just heard it screaming off the mountain. I haven’t heard that sound since the great storm of 87. There is something primal about that noise that makes it sound alive. Stay safe, folks.

For once the weather outside the window coincides with the weather in the chapter I’m writing. Every heavy frost and every extra snowflake can go straight down on the page.

What about some good news for a change? I have never seen so many primroses as there are this year - masses and masses of them carpeting the banks of every country lane.

More good news. I saw and heard a curlew yesterday. That is the most magical and eerie of sounds echoing across the moorland.
