Tung has been doing restoration work on this Paul Bailly (1844 – 1907) violin, mending a crack, refitting the pegs and top nut, shooting the fingerboard and carving a new bridge. Bailly was a pupil of J.B. Vuillaume.

Steve is repairing damage to the back of a violin which received a bad bash. He has repaired from the inside gluing and securing the damaged areas. He will be retouching the front next to leave no trace of the repair. It is by French maker Paul Bailly 1844–1907

Ed is re-working the neck of this viola. It was already made with a very thin neck and fingerboard and then repaired badly in the past. Ed is making a new fingerboard and creating a wedge to add strength and enable a reset.

Tung is cleaning and putting new bridges onto these two customer violins. One has slightly unusual measurements and construction. It’s longer than a standard size and has no top block. Instead, the neck is fixed with glue to the back and ribs.

Keisuke is working on repairs to a Vihuela; a 15th-century fretted plucked Spanish string instrument, shaped like a guitar but tuned like a lute. It was used in 15th- and 16th-century Spain as the equivalent of the lute in Italy.

Keisuke has been painstakingly repairing cracks from series damage to a customer’s lute. One the top is back on, no one will see the delicate web of repairs underneath and the lute will be restored to full health!

Looking at this lute that has come in to the workshop for some repairs and a re-string makes me thankful to be a violin player! ?!

It’s a hive of industry in the workspace at the moment. Steve is trying to find a rattle on a cello he is setting up, Keisuke is fixing a crack on a peg box, Ed is fixing the bridge on a customer’s violin and Gary has just taken off the top of a student bass

Massimiliano has been working to reassemble this violin which a customer found in pieces. Before starting the jigsaw puzzle he relaxed the wood by sealing the pieces in a moisture rich bag. The reassembly is going well and almost looks like a violin again!

This beautiful violin has just been set up for the use of a lucky Guildhall student. It’s a fine and rare violin C1800 by Nicolo Gagliano 11. We’ve recently had a test done and the latest ring in the wood dates from 1788, putting it firmly within Gagliano 11’s range

Steve is carefully shaping the ankles on this new bridge for a customer instrument. Every new bridge that we cut is uniquely prepared by hand to achieve the best possible sound
