The Fort William and Ardnamurchan ward seat of Lib Dem MP for Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire Angus MacDonald is also now showing on the Highland Council website as vacant, so another vote in the seeming perma-cycle of elections for that poor elections office!

The Westminster 4 (no Greens), British Unionist Party (this is the ward they have a councillor) and "Progressive Change North Lanarkshire" (a local outfit set up by dissident SNP councillors after significant chaos in the group)

Westminster 4 (again, no Greens), Reform UK and UKIP (who refuse to give up the ghost despite being utterly eclipsed by the former) for Mossend and Holytown

I think this is the first confirmed retirement for the 2026 Holyrood election; Christine Grahame, SNP MSP for Midlothian South, Tweedale and Lauderdale since 2011, and before that for the South region from 1999. Further diminishes the thin ranks of the 99ers.

I make it that there are still (Grahame included) 9 MSPs at Holyrood who have served since 1999, plus a further 4 who were first elected in 1999, lost their seat, and then later returned; that's 10% of the total, so it's now guaranteed to be single digits after 2026.

By-Election Preview: Fortissat (North Lanarkshire) 10th of October 2024 Labour can't fail to win a ward they won two by-elections in last term, and which has a history of incredibly staunch Unionism. Call: Labour Win ballotbox.scot/preview-fortis…

Yet another double bill (I'm so tired) due on the 14th of November in East Ayrshire; Kilmarnock West and Crosshouse (Lillian Jones is now MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun) and Doon Valley (Elaine Stewart is now MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock) newsroom.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/news/date-anno…

By-Election Preview: Mossend and Holytown (North Lanarkshire) 10th of October 2024 Another by-election in what would once have been the Labour heartland, that in current circumstances they should have no bother winning whatsoever. Call: Labour Win ballotbox.scot/preview-met/

Voters are today headed to the polls for the Arran by-election - they've been the only people in Scotland with no councillors at all for a few weeks! No SNP candidate and Conservative is non-resident, so viewing this as a Green-Labour-Independent tossup. ballotbox.scot/preview-arran/
