A recent discovery for #romanfortthursday, a Legio II Augusta supply base on the road to their fortress at Exeter. One ditch was of Punic profile: easy to jump into but hard to get out of! The idea was that attackers would be trapped and unable to escape fire from the ramparts.

A coin found in a late 1st century fire pit in Hamworthy last year. It’s believed to be a Neronian dupondius and might be an example of damnatio memoriae (condemnation of memory). Nero’s image has received a cut across the neck before being cast into the kiln fire. #FindsFriday

Desperately seeking Graham Webster’s Waddon Hill Roman fort excavation archive. It’s not in the obvious places. Any leads appreciated! #RomanFortThursday

The amazing Hod Hill fort eastern gateway earthworks. Fun fact: ballistas were positioned at the gates to fire upon the (predominantly) unshielded right sides of attackers #romanfortthursday
