Today, we celebrated World Environment Day connecting with nature at beautiful Lake Karago! We joined hands for birdwatching to see biodiversity around the lake, and took action by removing plastic waste to protect ecosytem. Every action matters—protect the environment.

We are leading the national waterbird count across 12 sites nationwide, engaging 76 participants from across Rwanda. This strong turnout reflects a growing and committed birdwatching and conservation community contributing data at scale.

This year’s count is especially significant as it marks 65 years of coordinated waterbird monitoring worldwide. The exercise underscores the value of citizen science in strengthening wetland knowledge and informing evidence-based conservation decisions.

A waterbirds count was conducted in key wetland and freshwater ecosystems of Rwanda. The exercise aimed to assess waterbird diversity, population abundance, and habitat condition, while contributing to long-term monitoring of wetland biodiversity.
