We need a better term for “emotionally based school avoidance”. Although better than “refusal” it still gaslights the child for what is often a rational response to a hostile environment. Locating the problem in the child’s emotions is also a barrier to addressing the hostility

'But we're all a little bit autistic' she said, and looked at me with confusion when I said 'I think you'll find many autistic people would not agree'. Typically Neurotypical.

“But they go out with friends”
“How come they manage to go to football practice?”
Because these are not school.
Often professionals expect to see the same presentation of our children the whole time. 1/

NEW POST: A report on for the @CCNoffice claims costs are driven by ‘increased parental expectations’. It says “something has to give”. We ask, what exactly, disabled children’s safety, perhaps? Read @captainK77’s analysis: specialneedsjungle.com/send-transport…

Even at 12 years old my autistic daughter wondered what the point of carrying on was when the world doesn’t work for autistics.

Pettechaie over a 7 yr old autistic child's chest from being held face down for over 30 minutes by education staff.

Why?

'He was disregulated and refused to follow instructions'

So that's punishment.

Unlawful.

Why is this not child abuse?

Oh... Cos it happens in school!

Süicide is one of the top killers of Autistic People.

Autistic people who mask (camouflaged their Autistic traits) are “show more signs of anxiety and depression, and the strategy may even been linked to an increase in suicidal behaviours”

In four & a half years of primary school, all my autistic daughter learnt was that she could not be herself, that she had to 'force' her brain to work to their way of working as a neurotypical & mask how it affected her. She's grown up thinking she's not a fit for this world.
